Modern Majlis Interior Design Ideas

The majlis is the heart of Qatari hospitality — a space for gathering, conversation, and connection. Designing a modern majlis that honors tradition while feeling contemporary is one of the most rewarding design challenges. Here are ideas for creating a modern majlis in Qatar.

Maintain the Traditional Layout

The U-shaped or L-shaped seating arrangement is fundamental to the majlis. It maximizes conversation and hospitality. Even in a modern majlis, we maintain this arrangement — the modernity comes from the materials, proportions, and detailing, not from changing the fundamental layout.

Use Contemporary Materials

Replace traditional heavy decoration with a contemporary material palette — limewash plaster walls, architectural timber panelling, and natural stone flooring. These materials provide warmth and texture without the visual heaviness of traditional majlis decoration.

Rethink the Ceiling

The ceiling is often the most overlooked surface in a majlis. A modern majlis ceiling can feature subtle geometric designs that reference Islamic architectural patterns without reproducing them literally. Integrated LED lighting in coffers or coves creates a warm, even glow.

Lighting for Atmosphere

Majlis lighting should be warm and welcoming. We use a combination of architectural cove lighting, decorative brass pendants, and wall washers that highlight the texture of plaster or timber. All lighting is dimmable to adjust the atmosphere for different gatherings.

Custom Floor Seating

Modern majlis seating can be custom-designed with removable cushions for easy maintenance. Upholstery in linen, wool, or leather provides comfort and durability. The base can be in architectural timber or stone for a refined look.

Subtle Cultural References

A modern majlis can include subtle cultural references — a Sadu-inspired textile, a geometric pattern in the floor inlay, or a decorative element in brass. The key is restraint — one or two references are more powerful than many.
